1930s: Classic Horror Movies And A Timeless Epic
Created: October 2006
Bela Lugosi established himself as the definitive vampire as the mysterious and hypnotic Count Dracula in one of the first memorable horror classics. “Dracula” is a very atmospheric adaptation of the Bram Stoker-novel, although it is a bit flawed by its slow dialogue.
Bela Lugosi was originally supposed to star as the monster in this movie, but he turned it down, and the role went to the unknown Boris Karloff. The film follows Dr. Henry Frankenstein as he creates artificial life in an experiment that ends up terrorizing a countryside after being mistreated by Frankenstein’s assistant. Karloff’s performancy is remarkable considering the time period, his acting is communicated with a hint of the pitiful humanity behind the grotesque monster.
“King Kong” is one of the greatest and famous classic adventure movies of all time, featuring stop-motion special effects animation and the screaming Fay Wray in a beaty and the beast tale. The movie still holds up against time and remakes like Peter Jackson’s boring and heavy CGI remake.
“Gone With the Wind” is one of the greatest star-filled historical epic films of all time. Starring Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh and Scarlett O’Hara in an epic Civil War drama filled with great costumes, sets, controversial subject matters for its time, a riverting musical score, and a huge cast. It was nominated for thirteen Oscars and won eight. It was the first color film to win Best Picture and it grossed over $200 millions.
