An intelligent, bleak film noir tale of corruption and struggle of power in the future Paris.
Set in a futuristic Paris in the year of 2054 where everyone is being monitored and recorded by megacorporations. The city’s largest company, Avalon, insinuates itself into every aspect of contemporary life to sell its primary export, youth and beauty. After meeting her sister at a nightclub, a woman who works for Avalon named Ilona Tasuiev is kidnapped. A lonely but tough cop by the name of Karas takes on the case to uncover the mystery behind the kidnapping.
“Renaissance” is an animated black and white film noir movie that combines elements from and is inspired by movies such as Blade Runner, Sin City, and The Matrix. The movie was created entirely with computers and a special renderer was used to achieve the unique black and white look, while matte paintings were used for some backgrounds. The future look of Paris was made by adding futuristic architecture on top of today’s city in order to create the believable 2054 version, and motion capture was used for most of the animations to give the characters their lifelike look.
The voice acting for the English version (the other one is French) of the movie is done with excellency by talents like Daniel Craig, Catherine McCormack, Ian Holm, and Jonathan Pryce. Unlike other recent animated movies, “Renaissance” is a remarkable movie targeting a more adult audience that keeps you mystified until the end. It stands out from the crowd with its unique look, bleak futuristic setting, intelligent story and film noir-feeling.
